Description of the Workers project:
Workers is an ongoing project, currently consisting of fifteen large scale colour photographs and a 20 minute video piece in which I explore situations where the sublime and the mundane intersect. This project is an outgrowth of my interest in ideas of the sublime and how they are connected to emotionalism and the way societies regard otherness.
In this project I stage women and men in different types of landscapes, where they are facing overwhelming and at times impossible tasks, such as mopping an airfield or dusting the beach. By removing the worker from their usual context and placing them in extraordinary natural landscapes, their mundane tasks appear compulsive yet also absurd. This emphasises the subjects’ strength and dedication while simultaneously exposing the futility and endlessness of their activities. They become outsiders, alone in carrying out their monotonous work; and yet their effort is heroic.
To investigate the universality of the topic and its possible relation to a nomadic pursuit, travel and personal exploration has become fundamental to my work. The series has so far been produced in a variety of locations including Norway, Sweden, Scotland, Germany, USA and Iceland.
